Adult chat sites can provide a great opportunity to have fun and flirt with like-minded people. However, as with many online contact media, there are some participants who are after your money rather than your time. Here's how to avoid common dangers and stay safe whilst having fun in adult chat rooms.
Keep your private self, private
When you enter the world of adult chat sites, it's important to bear in mind that not everyone is everything they claim to be. Of course, there are plenty of genuine people who want the same fun as you do, but there are also those who are out to make mischief. Don't use your real name when you create a profile, and carry on all communication through the site itself rather than giving out your personal phone number or email address. Never give away information about where you live or work.
Webcam chat scams
Unfortunately, there are a number of scams to be aware of when using adult chat rooms and contact sites.
In one scam, the person you're chatting with may tell you that they desperately want to buy a webcam so that they can progress your online flirting to another level. The problem is that they don't have any money. You might be fooled into sending the scammer money to buy the webcam, after which the scammer then vanishes without a trace, taking the money with them.
Unfortunately, at this point there would be nothing you could do to reclaim the money you sent because you gave it willingly. The only action you could take is to flag the site user to the site moderators so that the scammer's account can be closed, protecting other genuine users from future scam attempts. However, the user will likely have already deleted their original account and might be back under a different name.
Flash for cash!
This scam is a really scary one, especially if you're enjoying some chat room flirting. After some pretty intense, heavy duty online conversation, the scammer may suggest that you exchange mobile numbers so that you can 'sext' each other. You might agree and the 'sexting' will begin, usually escalating very quickly to exchanging intimate selfies. You might think that there's no harm in this as you're both in it together.
Then the new 'friend' might vanish without a word, leaving you as the victim feeling puzzled and slightly worried. A short time later, you might receive a text or an email demanding payment or else the compromising photos that you've sent will appear online for the whole world to see.
In cases like these, the victim has no way of knowing whether the blackmailer will carry out their threat, but some don't take that chance and willingly hand over a cash payment, hoping that will be the end of the matter. Of course, though, the blackmailer just keeps on coming back for more. Blackmail of this sort is a criminal offence, and victims do have redress through the police. However, many are too embarrassed to make a complaint, and besides, the blackmailer usually vanishes without trace as soon as the police become involved.
Again, adult chat sites are a great place to enjoy fun with like-minded individuals, but be wary of the possible dangers of flirting and chatting with strangers. Always keep your personal information private, and never send money to anyone, no matter how tempting the request may be.Share
